I'm guilty for that. I started the idea, but it was not a good one.
The conclusion is perhaps that a user point of view is not exactly compatible
with a developer point of view (could be seen as obvious but I didn't realize
that before, and this is an interesting experience).
The starting point was that every php package has its own user management
scheme, that makes developers lives more difficult because they have to develop
their own user management system, and user (webmaster/developer) lives harder
also because they have to mess around the code to destroy what the original
developer spend time and energy to create
So the point was : as a lot (perhaps 70 or 80% ) of what is required to manage
users, is staadard from an applciation to another, what about creating a common
base for that allowing several php packages to share the same user management
basis (extended on a case by case basis to fulfill 100% of the application
needs).
Reading all the (interesting) contributions, I'm no more convinced that this is
a good idea for PEAR, perhaps this is more a job to devote to a classical Open
Source package (by the way some user management packages does exist).
