At php-tools.net, I get a lot of mails from users, that have problems using a simple OO-API, it will take some time, till these users learned that you need to catch an exception and not try an if().
That's no reason not to use Exceptions. PEAR libraries are generally (always?) made up of classes; the fact that many users don't understand OO isn't a reason to make PEAR packages function libraries instead of classes. There will always be very many new & inexperienced PHP users. The best thing that PEAR can do is help educate these users by using new PHP5 features like Exceptions that are built into the PHP language. Certainlly, it should not try to dumb down the complexity of classes so that notice users can understand them! Hans
