Hi Guys, Recently I had a play with Ruby on Rails. I think I fell off my chair with the ease that I got through developing a simple web application. If you haven't already, go have a play with "Rolling with Ruby on Rails": http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/onlamp/2005/01/20/rails.html Now, all night I've been thinking as to why this isn't possible with PHP. I couldn't think of a reason. We've got: Templating/facetting (Smarty, or plain ole PHP+HTML) Database Abstraction Layers (ADODB, PEAR::DB) Base classes by the dozen (PEAR! Horde!) A package manager (PEAR again!)Yeah, but missing front controllers and a consensus development paradigm- two very important parts.
But I still find doing a prototype application is godawfully slow. Could PEAR itself benefit from some application 'helpers', similar to what Ruby On Rails has... something to build web applications (or any other concievable application) really quickly, then focus on implementing functionality rather than doing dirty work.Beware, you're probably about to get some resistance from others on the list to creating a framework. It has been pretty clear in the past that PEAR is not going to be a full-on framework. However, IMNSHO, PHP could certainly use such a framework. Currently there are a plethora of development styles and paradigms, most of them unique to every developer. Some random thoughts on this.... 1. It might be too late to get general acceptance in the PHP community for something like this. Compared to the Ruby web development community, the PHP community is quite old. :-) 2. Some of the stuff RoR does would is not even going to be possible with out the new Introspection stuff in PHP5.
Call it PHP in Pails if you need to :P Questions: 1) What have I missed from Rails that we already have in the PHP world... 2) Like it, hate it, let me know what you think... I've a developing itch to scratch :)But, you know what, don't listen to me. Scratch the itch. -ryan -- http://theryanking.com/blog
