Back when I looked at it (a while ago) it looked a lot like what DB_DataObject_FormBuilder does. It allows pretty quick web app developing...once you get your DOs working and figure out how to use it, of course. It's also very flexible, which is what I like. I have always wanted a web-only app to create DB and forms and such and was working towards this with rdbEdit back when I knew only PEAR::DB. I since found FormBuilder and have brought it up closer to what I want. And with DB_DO_FB_Frontend (see reversefold.com) you have a full data editing app. It still takes a lot of work to get your forms up, but it should be (eventually) easier.
I have the same feeling. RoR looks like hype (because it's new, it's demonstrated with a short video and it's eye candy), and IMO there have been features like this in PEAR for ages, though maybe not all tied together in a package because that's not our philosophy in PEAR. Eventually, a Phing script could create everything you need by examining your database structure, creating DB_DO and FormBuilder objects and making well organized directories for you to work with. Still, like in RoR, you would end up with a little web application which is nowhere near what you really need in web development in terms of complexity and flexibility. But that's just my opinion, it certainly depends on the size of your projects.
I agree. The pieces are all there. I am hopeful that DB_Schema along with some MDB2_Frontend will even solve the initial configuration problem one of these days. However I stil want to take a closer look at RoR to cherry pick some of the ideas we are still missing. If you want I can open a wiki where people can try to put together a RoR equivalent based on PEAR packages. regards, Lukas
