a) It's not E_STRICT compliant.
b) It's exceedingly simple to do what I want with cURL (i.e. way more
simple than converting HTTP_Request to PHP5).

An extension based (xmlrpci, for example) backend would also avoid cURL
and provide other advantages (performance, namely)
