I've posted some benchmarks today in a separate post, dedicated to
debunking the dogma of require_once cost.
As for the API, bot extensions fail to use PHP5's catchall methods. You
end up doing something like:
$proxy->call('methodName', [params])
when XML_RPC2 uses the catchall to create a transparent proxy. Remote
method calls are just like local ones:
$proxy->methodName([params])
Neither API leverages docblock documentation for introspection.
