Zend Framework has some good ideas and even the implementation in PEAR2 SVN
has stuff to borrow.

I am unsure if we need many adapters... imho raw sockets and cURL would be a good start (pecl php, streams and whatever can wait...).
The more adapters we have, the more bugs we will face...
Of course we need a full unit-test suite, lack of that for HTTP_Request is a
major problem in its development.
Of course, this is crucial.

Sure, and I even decided to start something this weekend. Hopefully, I'll setup a googlecode project very soon (tomorrow maybe) so we can all hack on it.
