Do you want to install the PEAR base stuff or do you want to install
PEAR packages? If you just want to get the base stuff ("PEAR package
manager"), you only need to compile PHP (./configure; make; make
install) and all the stuff will be there. If you want to install PEAR
packages from CVS, do it like this:
$ cvs -d :pserver:cvsread@cvs.php.net:/repository login
$ [phpfi is the password
$ cvs co pear
$ cd pear/XML_RSS [or whatever you want to install]
$ pear install package.xml
