Beta versions supposed to work. Can have bugs, yes, but Date package is
unusable. It dies with a fatal error in the moment that you require it.
It has no sense on having a package in this state, even in alpha state.
I'm the author of Date_Span and detected the problem a long time ago. I
mailed to Pier-Alain (one of the mantainers of Date) a few times to ask
him to fix it (it's as simple as adding Date/Span.php to package.xml)
but without success.
