Hi, Lukas,
Then again both package authors are currently addressing those limitations. MDB 2.x is loads simpler then MDB 1.x. Alan is adding stuff to DataObject and once our rather elaborate plans of integrating the yet to be released DB_Schema with MDB with DataObject with some Form package with Validate become a reality we can obviously apply for world domination.I for one will welcome our new PEAR masters.
Then again those plans are rather elaborate. So they will take time. At the same time I am hesitant to add another package in this area. Remember we also have QueryTool (which also has a new version in the works). At the same time your package is very real and sounds like it could solve user problems.Yes, it is difficult to choose between these trade-offs.
I guess in a perfect world we would all be working on the one true solution. Well this world isn't perfect, so we all seem to be approaching the issue from several sides. I am not sure if this will provide an ultimate benefit for the users by giving more choice or if it will lead to now people being confused about which if the zillion DB package to big from (well we already have that confusion we would only make it worse).I don't think there will ever be "one true solution." TMTOWTDI, as the Perl guys say (there's more than one way to do it). The are groups of solutions, though, and I think DB_Simple groups different solutions well when it comes to simple DB automation and abstraction (that's why it's "simple" ;-).
The only reason I have not released it is that I am waiting for improvements in the PEAR installer.Aren't we all...
At that point MDB will be loads simpler and also a port of DataObject in the current form would be trivial.I really do look forward to a simpler MDB, and I'd not hesitate to deprecate DB_Simple in favor of it (given that I can extend it to do DB_Simple kinds of things quickly and easily -- c.f. the File_IMC discussion with reference to Contact_Vcard a few weeks ago). The big deal is going to be writing up full documentation on the new and improved MDB so that any dummy (like me) can get to working with it quickly. But the fact remains that MDB and DB_DataObject are not providing everything I need in the same package, at least not right now -- and if it's not doing it for me, then there are bound to be others in the same situation. I like DB, I think it's a good package, and DB_Simple builds a few things on the foundation of DB that provide a great deal of convenience and automation without users having to to a lot of work for it -- sort of a lowest common denominator between MDB, DB_DataObject, QueryTool, etc. _______________________________________________________________________ Paul M.
