Hi,
ok I just took a quick look at the code on the train from frankfurt (stayed
two days longer).
I must say that I don't really see the benefit of the class either. Actually
I think its mixes too many jobs and doesn't do either of them completely. So
my simply answer is: no, I don't think this class fits well into PEAR, not
only because we already have existing solutions, but also because it is
against the philosophy of having multiple packages which do one job.
I generally don't understand why you are not building off of MDB. If you
think that MDB is too complex for the common user then there is no problem
either since you are wrapping the db interface class anyways. Either way MDB
2.x is the solution to your problems. Its easy, its extensible and it is
much more complete and proven than DB_Simple. On the other end of the
spectrum we have QueryBuilder and DataObject. I think whatever you may be
missing in either package you can easily add there (most of these features
are probably on the respective authors list and both of them are quite
sensible for all I know, so while any patches you will provide might not
directly make it into either of the package, but a patch will definitely
speed up the process of seeing that feature added).
Finally if you are looking for a larger solution then I also propose to try
to improve the integration of existing packages, rather than making one
single package to rule them all (dunno if that was your long term goal).
Anyways I am biased on my ideas of having DB_Schema playing the great
integrator.
So while I respect your efforts it's a -1 from me. I hope that you will find
a way to get some of your ideas and needs into existing packages. Maybe you
want to take over the lead in my DB_Schema idea (right now its mostly only
an idea, so its not too early to turn it into your baby) if you feel the
need for some parental responsibility ;-) Other than that I think we have
all the pieces in PEAR already .. eventhough they are not yet a clean fit
between each other.
Regards,
Lukas
