To me, as an objective user on the sideline, it looks like if the PEAR team
are really eager to develop their own DB abstraction layer, which seems
kinda silly considering the number of such layers allready out there. Why
reinvent the wheel when you can port some already mature solution?! Metabase
seems to offer what is needed, and has matured for two years right?. As a
Why not PHPlib, ADODB and so on ?
It is not because something has been here a long time that it is mature. How old are you ? Do you consider yourself as mature ?
PHP user, I'm really eager to see something come out of PEAR, but the
reluctance to adopt a good solution that I've seen over the past days here
really surprises me and makes me wonder when I will see something useful
come out of PEAR.
Pick up your keyboard and start doing something, but stop criticizing other people's work as you have no ideas how long it takes to make it happen. There are a lot of useful things in PEAR which I use daily to make our programming easier and cleaner. Study the code there is in PEAR components, you might learn a lot. Then, if you find anything you don't like, just submit your changes.
The point is not to change the DB abstraction layer, the point is how to improve it.
