No not necessarily, but it the longer something has been around the better
are the chances that bugs have been removed. My impression of Metabase is
very good, and the main idea in my post was that rather than writing a new
DB layer, adopt one existing. But, I'm not expert on the other abstraction
layers available, and obviously the developers should choose the best one.

Aw shit! Why do people always have to pull that "stop whining and do it
yourselves"? I mean, just because I'm not a PEAR developer am I not entitled
to an opinion? If users didn't criticize the work done by the developers,
then how would they get any feedback? I would be glad to help if I felt that
there was anything I could do, but I can't go in and start replacing PEAR-DB
with Metabase now can I?
To me it seems like PEAR is too early in development for use in a standard
production enviroment, and the documentation at pear.php.net is almost
empty?

Exactly.
