Yes, I can understand why you don't see the problem. You seem to have
arrived to the PEAR world recently. If you have came earlier, you would
notice that there have been plenty of people like Vincent complaining
about these and other issues and PEAR developers only had one position:
reject all arguments!

The statement was a little longer: use your brain instead of your ego .
This means that because PEAR developers (mostly Tomas and Stig) want to
monopolize the decisions or the implementation of key PEAR components
just to satisfy their egos, they prevent the whole community to benefit
the community with better implementations of such components.

Quantity is not as relevant as quality.

Oh, I am so glad you brought that up.
You know, I just talked with Lukas Smith that commited himself through
the heavy task of merging Metabase into PEAR-DB.
Lukas is very unsatisfied because Tomas Cox is continuing to boycott
Metabase-PEAR-DB merger by stalling Lukas forever.
You know that Tomas implemented a significant part of current PEAR-DB
implementation, so he is so attached to his code, that he is doing all
he can to boycott or at least stall Metabase merger into PEAR.
In the begining it was all that story of code formating rules that would
be mandatory. You know, Metabase is a very complete package and so it is
long. It has now over 12.000 lines of PHP counting all drivers. Tomas
knew that reformating Metabase code to PEAR would take an etternity. So,
he bet on that argument to boycott Metabase.
Maybe he did not count that Lukas was brave enough to PEARify enough
code to demonstrate that the effort is worthy. So, since he could no
longer use the arguable code formating argument, he used the also
arguable argument of lack of performance. I don't think he even verified
it.
This made Lukas run to optimize Metabase further even in places of
questionable impact. When Lukas asked for help to Tomas, what Lukas
understood is that instead of helping him, Tomas was working hard on
optimizing his PEAR-DB implementation. Of course we are not dumb that he
don't realize that Tomas is only concerned to voiding Lukas efforts by
desperatly try to make PEAR-DB a better implementation in any aspect
that could be used as argument to not merge Metabase in PEAR-DB for once
and for all.
All I can say is that this posture is insulting, if not for me, at least
for Lukas and the PEAR community that expects that this merger really
happens so everybody can benefit of the best there is in the PHP world.
Anyway, I am not surprised. Tomas may have fooled Lukas and the PEAR
community but he never fooled me. It seems his ego is so much more
important than the benefit of the PEAR community. This makes all this
story of his availability to cooperate a big farse.
I trust that now you may understand better what I mean of: use your
brain instead of your ego. This applies directly to Tomas and all those
that really do not want Metabase to come into PEAR but do not have the
consistency to admit it publically.
I always said, I do not want to go where I am not wanted. But if I am
not wanted, I would like those that do not want me to have the decency
of admiting it publically so he stop making each other spend time on
things that will never happen.
I hope by now you understand, that despite people here tried to sound
nice to the Vincents that naively come here trying to help presenting
their criticisms and suggestions to make PEAR better accepted, in
practice they are being hostile because they reject everything that does
not match their opinion. This elitism will always compromise PEAR
chances to succeed.
