Hello, I'm trying to install pear on a shared host with go-pear. I've created a world writable directory outside the document root. The go-pear script is in a subdirectory of the documet root. The php binary is in /usr/local/bin/php So: The go-pear script is in: /opt/guide/www.domain.com/HTML/pear/go-pear.php , $prefix = /opt/guide/www.domain.com/pear , for filename of webfrontend I have: /opt/guide/www.domain.com/HTML/pear/index.php and for php.exe path I have /usr/local/bin/php When I run go-pear I first get the warning: Warning: set_time_limit(): Cannot set time limit in safe mode in /opt/guide/www.domain.com/HTML/pear/go-pear.php on line 79 Starting installation ... and then the error: Error System's Tempdir failed, trying to use $prefix/tmp ...mkdir failed: / mkdir /tmp ... failed What is going wrong here? I checked, the $prefix directory is world writable. I don't understand it.. I hope somebody can help me with this..Your host has set up safe mode (see the error message) which makes it very difficult to run pear. The best option is (if possible) on a local unix box, install with the exact paths you wish to use, and then ftp the installed files to your host. However, before you try this, perhaps try to make the temporary directory yourself, as I think there may be restrictions in safe mode on making directories (not an expert though) Greg
