I have an idea of what is causing these problems. From: http://www.php.net/manual/en/features.safe-mode.functions.php fopen: Checks whether the directory in which you are about to operate has the same UID (owner) as the script that is being executed. What this really means is that if you run the exact command sequence I just described on your OS X, with the addition of two commands: $ pear -c .pearrc install PEAR Console_Getopt Archive_Tar $ ln -s /opt/usr/username/pear /opt/usr/username/DOMAIN/pear/pear If this works out at home you should be able to do: $ ./pear -c .pearrc -V successfully Then, upload the exact structure and make sure permissions are the same so that the executable script pear in /opt/usr/username/DOMAIN/pear/pear is still chmod +x Then, from your remote host, try $ ./pear -c .pearrc -V and if that works fine, try $ ./pear -c .pearrc install DB Greg
