Apology for the late response. Do you mean it's it difficult to run pear altogether in this environment (safe mode on) or do you mean it is just difficult to run the installer? This host does have pear installed. IThe installer. Most likely, your host runs the installer as root and sidesteps the issues you would experience.
just wanted to install a newer version with some extra packages. Following your advise I have created a similar directory structure in Mac OS X, installed pear in it and uploaded the resulting files and directories. I have not tested this yet, should I expect any problems with it?You should expect it to work smashingly :). The only thing you will have trouble with is anything that any program has trouble with in safe mode. Creation of files/directories opening files outside the accepted sandbox, using functions/classes that are not allowed, and so on. The best thing to do is to set up a local PHP on OS X that has an identical configuration (safe_mode on) and test it out before you upload. This will guarantee that you can count on things working once you develop them. Remotely debugging is just no fun at all when your endusers see the same bugs that you do. However, if you *do* have shell access, you can ask the existing installer to use a custom configuration file. Just reply back if this is possible, and I'll walk you through it. If you don't have shell access, it still might be possible to set up the web installer with a custom configuration file and avoid go-pear. Greg
