The aim of mail() is to provide an abstract
system-independent interface for sending mail. If it would
not be portable, we should not hide the two distinct
functionalities (talking to sendmail vs. SMTP) and make these
directly accessible to users.
If the current release branch introduces a requirement which
renders mail() unportable, I would consider it to be a
showstopper, because it puts the burden of code audits onto
users without any clear benefit.
