If it would not be portable, we should not hide the two distinct functionalities (talking to sendmail vs. SMTP) and make these directly accessible to users.If the current release branch introduces a requirement which renders mail() unportable, I would consider it to be a showstopper, because it puts the burden of code audits onto users without any clear benefit.
