Hi,
As incredible as this is to me, Travis's blog post
http://www.travisswicegood.com/index.php/2009/06/02/my-goals-for-the-php-standards-group
makes it clear that the purpose of the standards list is to actively
shut out input from the outside world because of statements like this:
"All of us are too busy, both with real jobs and our various projects,
to fight the battles that come of trying to make this a completely open
process where anyone with an email address can contribute. Sad as it may
be, pear-dev has demonstrated that coding standards *must* go the way of
sausages and laws lest they devolve into a constant "but I think <insert
favorite coding standard pet peeve> is better, and this is why..."
followed by pages of well meaning, but generally irrelevant content."
If this intention is truly as Travis represents it, I would like to
formally request that this list be removed, and that the group in
question stop using "PHP" in its title, as it does not represent
anything close to a PHP standard. Being "too busy" to take serious
suggestions from outsiders seriously is unacceptable in open source.
If I have misinterpreted the intention, please correct me by eliminating
all closed lists, and all language excluding input from outsiders. To
be clear: no one is suggesting that the final decision should be made by
democratic vote, but as in any representative democracy, the people have
the right to petition their representatives and the representatives have
the responsibility to listen to the petitions. The problem here is that
this is being treated more like a fascist state than a representative
democracy, and that attitude most definitely does not belong anywhere
near php.net.
Thanks,
Greg
