MySQL is dual licensed GPL/Commercial. It has an FOSS exception and ext/mysqli is under PHP License v3, hosted on cvs.php.net and bundled with PHP. Where is the difference? That's what I'd like to understand too. The reason why GeoIP won't be LGPL, is because you HAVE to buy a commercial license if you're not distributing an Open Source application. If it is put under LGPL, Maxmind won't be able to sell commercial license. This is exactly the same case as with MySQL. Furthermore, with the GeoIP case, I know the company is really helpful for getting the inclusion of the PHP module on PECL and be able to reach the overall PHP community. They want to allow a license change for PHP, but they also need to keep their business running. A part of this business is selling the commercial license (I guess, since this is pure speculation) In other words, what would be needed (besides LGPL the whole library) to be safe and allow the hosting of a PECL module under PHP License?
