MySQL purchase is not required in normal commercial use, I can use MySQL but I can not distribute MySQL, So compiling against the MySQL library you distribute the Cross lic library not MySQL itself.
IBM does not have to pay for MySQL unless they include MySQL within software they sell.
GeoIP on the other hand requires a commercial lic if its used in a commercial enviroment regardless of distribution!!

Hi Sara, Sara Golemon wrote:" You must obey the GNU General Public License in all respects for all of the code used other than code licensed under version 3.0 of the PHP license." My reading: GeoIP library is used by GeoIP extension which is used by PHP, ergo GeoIP library is used by PHP (basic transitive association). Since any user of the GPL licensed code must obey the GPL terms then the viral argument against inclusion still applies. IANAL, but it seems like it would be more straight-forward to declare a dual license for the library. LGPL licensed (or even PHP licensed, but I don't want to be too hopeful) to the PHP/GeoIP extension, GPL licensed to all other users. -SaraMySQL is dual licensed GPL/Commercial. It has an FOSS exception and ext/mysqli is under PHP License v3, hosted on cvs.php.net and bundled with PHP. Where is the difference? Andrey
