that is indeed, what Egon Schmid is "preaching" since i know
him ;-). Actually everybody - especially if he/she ist working
with XML - should know that using short-tags in PHP is not
xml-conform. Everybody s h o u l d use it, but why force
them?

I think it worked well until now and the developers should
not change this one. Many "PHP-Programmers" are using short
tags, even though this is IMHO "bad style". But the point is
not, what i think is "good style", but what the way, most people
are using PHP. To change it now, it would probably crash many
scripts (not my ofcourse), especially if you think
of all those people, that have no access to their php.ini.
People working with XML are often advanced programmers and
generally use the "right" style anyway. So why do you want
to break many scripts, just for the "small" benefit of some?
