IANAL but I cant see how writing code that interacts with certain libaries is illegal when their liciences are not compatible with ours. Its a loss on both sides if it ends up with not being able to resolve this (If anyone here has some legal training perhaps they could set us straight).James, It has nothing to do with legal training. The main problem with the GPL is that it means what Richard Stallman wants it to mean. Sometimes, he even goes beyond what he's allowed to do as far as the law is concerned, and relies on the public support, which unfortunately works sometimes. Even if we prove to him that it's A-OK to release a readline-compatible extension, that won't satisfy him. As I said, he put PHP under a magnifying glass (he's angry that we dropped the GPL), and if he doesn't find something wrong in there, he'll invent it. That's life, and we can live with that.
