Well it is very readable, and concise (by definition), and also Consistent.
1. <?php echo $val?>
    <?php=$val?>
2. <?echo $val?>
    <?=$val?>
3. <% echo $val %>
    <%=$val%>

In fact we even call "<%" asp tags ... and asp has the <%=val%> tag

Exactly how doeas it make the less obviosu. PHP is embeded into html. So
how is an "echo" statement in the middle of an html file any less obvious than an equal
sign?

How is it ambiguios, there is only one possbible interpretation. I do not agree that php
is completely self-documenting. How else would you know to put a "<?php" without
reading the
documentation?
