Well, I would argue that you should learn one popular *nix text editor.
Weather it be pico, joe, vi, emacs whatever. Pretty much all distro's come
with vi, most come with pico, many have joe. And you should be proficient
enough at any of them to be able to get a simple job done if your first
choice isn't available.
I could use vi to get the job done, but I'd rather not. And I spend a lot
of time on the command line. Vi isn't a necessity, but certainly a terminal
interface text editor is required if you spend any amount of time using
*nix.
