I agree with you Elizabeth - with it being that size, definitely keep it as a separate download. The idea was never to compete with the JRE for bulk :)

I think it might be a smart idea to separate out the extensions and their runtime components (for example, gtkhtml has an ENORMOUS number of files needed - like most of bonobo and gconf - just to run). But the alpha didn't have any of the php binary files, and these do (plus the alpha was missing some runtime files, and 2.10 is a lot bigger than 2.6.9) so take that into account when comparing sizes.
I was only talking about the debug pack, I'm well aware of the scary size of GTK+ these days.
Have you tried building in gconf as a static library? Or is that a silly suggestion for some reason?
