To follow up on what I just said - it actually does change the API, a bit. It implements new semantics on zend_file_handle, and it also alters the size of zend_file_handle. This may affect certain plugins and modules (before anybody brings up any conspiracy theories, no, it doesn't affect any Zend products). There may be other API changes we haven't yet spotted, though.
