If we change /error/index.php -> /error.php
I would be very happy to see this change for 'good looking organization'
reasons, but I was unable to come up with a good method for it which
would not break all mirrors. They all have ErrorHandlers set to
/error/index.php :(((
How about something like this:
error/index.php:
<?php
chdir($_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']);
include $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'] . '/error.php';
?>
Well maintained mirrors would just use /error.php; other mirrors would
be supported using this method until they update.
We might need to fake a few variables for the benefit of the script, and
just make sure we use fully qualified URI's when redirecting.
Well I am not clear on why chdir() is needed. I know that code quite well, and AFAIK there are only either absolute file_exists() and incldue() calls, or include() calls relative to include_path. The code also relies on vars prepared by prepend.inc and the include files included by that. So I don't think we need to have too many tweaks here. A simple include will probably do.
May I also suggest caching? The cache related headers are used very
differently on pages. There are some pages which include specific
caching headers for no real reason. Generally I think that caching can
probably be enhanced.
Correct caching (particularly of the manual pages, and the home page)
would be a very good idea.
I am far from a caching expert, so this is a field, where I am unable to give ideas. I have in fact put the URL of the part of the HTTP RFC detailing caching at the top of prepend.inc so I don't forget it, and others will also easily find it ;)
