Some points why it is not feasible: 1) The correct working of cache feature requires lots of tweaks to the underlying classes (see <!-- INCLUDE --> hack, for example) and lots of knowledge of its internals (see also 3). I'd end up rewriting most of ITX in my extended class anyway. 2) I want to improve other part of ITX as well --- callbacks. This will probably break BC in some way, and you know Pierre's urge to keep as much BC as possible. 3) Consider for a moment: you maintain MDB/mysql.php, while MDB/Common.php is maintained by another person, with whom you can't get along quite well and who was against adding MySQL support to MDB from the very beginning. Sweet, eh?
