Besides, in real world, software does much more than
sets variables or properties 10000000 times in a loop.
Of course using accecssor methods is slower. No one
is arguing that. However I doubt the performance penalty
is usually nothing compared to other botlenecks forgotten
into the code.
Of course if other parts of your code is perfect, the
speed gain from accessing properties directly will
be relatively bigger.
