Yeah, I know they're kind of a hack, but they work just fine (it's
what Frontend uses in its table view).

Happy to listen to a little ranting now and then. I agree, we don't
have to sompletely clone .NET, but if we follow the plan laid out in
this thread we will be abstracting out the data source for DataGrid...
