I would say use QuickForm. HTML_Form is old and moldy. ;-)
Why is it old, it has been recently updated. It seems that HTML_Form is a more light weight class and may be better suited if QuickForm has way more features than are needed to be used.

Again, I would say it would be useful to allow different kinds of editing to happen. FormBuilder is what should be used with DataObjects so that links and such can be handled correctly. BTW, why are you talking about editing columns per data source? I would think that the editable things would be rows, not columns.
The columns are the "data type" and the rows are the "data" in my point of view. If the column is "editable" you can edit the data per row in the columns that are specified. This concept may be able to replace the "formatter" method in the column by creating a "link_column" class in which all data in that column would have a link. Take a look at phpMyAdmin, that's where my ideas for the editable column came from. Andrew
