Why limiting the editing on a per-record basis ? For example, at the database level you usually grant permissions to the whole table, no to records. Of course, in some more complex situations, you can have an owner for each record, so that each user can only edit certain records. Is this the kind of issue you want to address ?
Take a look at this: http://www.aspnet101.com/aspnet101/aspnet/codesample.aspx?code=dgEdit
I had read about this nested form thing, but did not give it a try. This live demo is very interesting :) Glad to see that it does not rely on Javascript.
Or this: http://dotnetjunkies.com/Article/B8550E4B-B8F5-4446-B065-0B19F4C739BC.dcik
Smart, especially this : http://dotnetjunkies.com/Content/pvan74/B8550E4B-B8F5-4446-B065-0B19F4C739BC/articl13.jpg But personnally I would use an Edit button and a dedicated form page in most cases. And DataGrid does not even support it... To me, these inline forms are not-so-needed advanced features, although I must say I have heard some of my users complaining like : "But why can't I modify it directly, like in Excel"... But I consider this is related to the spreadsheet obsession : it's good for both everything and nothing, but it's the only thing many people know. By the way, what do you think of my experiments with DG (remember your "urged" me to contribute ;), as I uploaded here : http://www.xung.org/misc/dgdo And what about my event-based ideas that you wiped out in your current answer ? Any constructive criticism is welcome. -- og
