Your package looked like what I needed, with respect to Hannes'
suggestions. I will look at XML_Tree as well. This package is written
in PHP4, so the PHP5 XML manipulating functions are not available.

Thanks for your frank appraisal of your package's suitability. I will
look into all the options. The fact of the matter is that there is less
to go wrong if I use an XML package in place of concatenation, but I
will certainly bear your opinion in mind.
