Yeah but no one seems to want to discuss or actually try to organize anything, I think we should defenatly talk about a plan of action but everyone is taking the way they want.. This will not work well for PEAR if we keep going like this, with 2-3 people deciding where we are going and no one else knowing and just following like little rabbits.. We need to have a general plan, an idea that we can all follow. On 9/29/06, Jesus M. Castagnetto <jcastagnetto@yahoo.com> wrote:
Just my 0.02 In my personal experience (with Open Source and Scientific Computing projects), the evolution of a project discussion usually goes through several stages (this is just off the top of my head, so it might not be complete or exact): (1) brainstorming/random exchange (2) initial consolidaton of main points (3) prioritization of tasks (4) final decisions and planning (5) execution and monitoring of progress For (1) and (2), I've found that mailing lists work quite well, forums do not work that well because of several reasons. One is that with email, I can read it anytime even offline, which is something not feasible with forums. Also, I can make use of many search tools to extract what I need, not just the ones that the forum app offers. Another thing that helps for (1) is blogs and such but to a lesser extent. For the later stages of (2) and (3), I find that wikis work very well indeed. Mailing lists also do, but there is more immediate feedback and a track of changes when using a collaborative document. Mediawiki is a good system for this, because discussion pages can be attached to a given document, etc. But something as simple as DokuWiki, etc. should do the trick. For (4) wikis could work too, but as things at that stage are a bit more solid, and usually having set-on-bits (not stone :-), putting that on a web site should be better. Easy to refer to and a reminder of the what is the plan. Finally for (5) mailing lists work, but blogs do too. It is good to have a bug/issue tracking system for the this stage too. So, we got the tools, just need to pick the right one for the problem. Cheers. -- Jesus M.
