Although multiple languages is nice for the world, it would mean that duplicate discussions are carried out. As far as I am aware the pear-general mailing list is only available in English currently and still gets enough traffic.
I would suggest a separate forum for each package, so each package webpage could have adirect link to the relevant support forum too. A nice integrated approach to the existing PEAR website.
In some ways that is like Google Groups does for the newsgroups? As long as the PEAR-Group where hapy about the quality of the forum setup I'm sure it would be acceptable to keep a 'brand' acros to he forums, same colour, layout, logo etc. I noticed the German PEAR forum looks rather, hmm, different.
Currently I am more in favor of really keeping these forums separate of the pear page. Linking any pear related site from the support section is of coruse a given. However what ever gts a pear subdomain or package level links is essentially part of the pear website and would therefore be done by the pear webmaster team. The pear webmaster team already has alot of work ahead of them with expanding the site with other important features (comments, bug system, wiki, qa tools) which the developer team needs or maybe even a total redesign. Of course more people can make more things happen, however this obviously doesnt scale linearly and also it takes time to incorporate new people into the team. Finally for all I know there is also a difference in how forums are preceived. Forums expect a much higher level of active moderation compared to mailinglists (this may just be my personal perception). So whatever we add we have to continue to maintain even if some people dont have time anymore to handle it. So basically I think our priority should be to provide developer tools, after that come tool for developer to enduser interaction. Involving us also with enduser to enduser communication might simply be too much. This is why I prefer forums on a separate site. regards, Lukas Smith smith@backendmedia.com _______________________________ BackendMedia www.backendmedia.com berlin@backendmedia.com Linn Zwoch Smith GbR Pariser Str. 44 D-10707 Berlin Tel +49 30 83 22 50 00 Fax +49 30 83 22 50 07
