Is there not a product out there - open-source of course - that deals with both emails and forum formats? If not - maybe that's my next project!!!!!
I've been thinking about the same kind of thing. One of the ideas I've had recently, given my thoughts about PEAR-DOC and a live commenting system, is that it would be possible to write a front-end to a mailing list system that looks like a web-based forum. You log in, post to the forum, and two things happen: (1) the post is saved in a DB and shows up in the web forum, and (2) the post is sent out as email to the list subscribers. There are some significant details to be worked out there. For example, it might be wise to put a "do not reply" in the email at the top of bottom, with a link to the proper forum for replies, because emails to the list itself are not not tied to the web forum; or, do we allow anonymous users (I'd suggest not for reasons of accountability). That way you get the benefits of a forum with most of the benefits of a mailing list. Something to think about. -- Paul M. Jones Savant: the simple alternative to Smarty. http://phpsavant.com/
