Terence, Just remember that it is not always the same for everyone :) I love the pear intsaller it lets me query and keep updated my growing PEAR library I would hate to have to download and replace the whole package each time, cross checking versions and checking dependancies ect.. so in my humble opinion it is the way to go. There's just too many bloody hoops to jump through. It would be a truckload easier just to download packages as zip file (or tar or whatever) and just put them in yourslef. Instead you have to fart arse about with batch files that don't work most of the time and other miscellaneous configurations. it took me ages to get go-pear to work but I persevered (and punched a hole in my firewall) and it eventually ran. Only to find out that it doesn't get all the packages. Then I had to find out about how to use CVS which is another epic journey all of it's own only to finnaly connect and find a readme file which says "now you gotta run this command" - which predictably does not work. So then you gotta hack the shell script and then it still does not work. It's insane. -- PEAR General Mailing List (http://pear.php.net/) To unsubscribe, visit: http://www.php.net/unsub.php Fair enough, but like you said, "it is not always the same for everyone". For some people it would be easier to have individual packages available to them as archives which they could easily deploy when the install process does not work for them. I sincerely doubt that I am the first to experience problems with this install "process".
