I also don't like the part about borrowing syntax from C/Perl/Java. Having a line such as "very easy to learn both for beginners and experienced programmers" would probable be more attractive. Andi At 12:24 PM 5/13/00 -0400, Michael Stearne wrote:
I honestly think though that this would be a better description of what PHP is then talking how to use it. I don't think telling about the syntax of PHP ( "..which borrows syntax from C/Perl/Java....") really matters in a description. People are more interested in if the product they are looking at does the job they are looking to do. Who cares what the syntax is, you can learn that, I think it should focus more on features. I've heard PHP descibed as an application server recently on Macromedia's UltraDev site: "Support for industry-standard application servers

Andrei, With PHP 3, I would have wanted to add that the language was written in the spirit of "little languages" like awk, but simplicity in mind, but I'm not so sure that claim can be made any more with PHP4... 8^) How about: PHP is a simple but powerful cross-platform, general-purpose, open source scripting language. It can be used stand-alone, but is particularly well suited for Web development, and can be embedded within HTML. Its syntax borrows from C, Java, and Perl. It has commands providing for data manipulation, easy access to a number of major databases, and important Internet protocols, and is extensible via an API. It is widley used, and actively supported by a talented and energetic international development and support team. Numerous open source and commercial PHP-based application packages are available.
