I can understand the reasoning for avoiding the 'borrowing syntax' line in
an official description of this nature. However, when I'm explaining PHP
to somebody, I describe the syntax as being along the same vein as Java,
C, and Perl. Saying it's very easy to learn is fine, but one could argue
ColdFusion is easy to learn too. I consider the similarity in style and
syntax between PHP and other languages to be a strong point of PHP,
because anyone with even modest background in Perl or a C-style language
can literally pick up PHP in a matter of days.
