Bit of a me too, but i'm also using Ora 8.0.x to conenct to a remote Ora 7.
I'll have the 8.1.whatever downloaded and give it a go.
Thanks for the info guys as i was starting to bang my head against the wall,
but the best thing is that it feels so much better now ive stopped.
On a side note how about making a "PHP in a box" what i mean is that we
could have a PHP for windows with apache set up and ready to go as long as
the installer installs it to c:\web or whatever. You could include a few
test scripts etc plus some smaples from the PEAR DB abstarction layer (ive
been meaning to learn this anyway). I currently have an install of apache
and php that i can basically lift from PC to PC. And id be happy to make
this happen if we can get some space somewhere (im loath to set a _another_
php site)
What i would suggest is:
1. Have everything under one directory structure ie: c:\web\apache
c:\web\php4 c:\web\site (for include files and htdocs) c:\web\tmp (for
session cookies etc)
2. Include support for virtual hosts (maybe the install script can help the
user change the and install a HOSTS file if not supported by DNS) I see this
as importnt as i always have 3 different v.hosts eg: web.mycompany.com ,
webtst.mycompany.com, webdev.mycompany.com this way i can have a development
space as well as test space and a production site.
3. Have a htdocs (i would suggest c:\web\site\dev\htdocs\examples dev would
be for the webdev virtual host) with examples. We can add to these over
time.
The only difficult thing i see is automatically changing the apache .conf
files on install to match host names. (We could even allow the user to
install where they want but we'd need to change this as well). This would be
pretty easy to do with a perl script compiled to an .exe, or maybe a VB app
(last VB i used was V3 so any takers?) or maybe InstallShield (which i know
nothing about)
Once such a project is underway we'd only need to grab the best Apache win
binaries and php binaries and keep up to date .ini and .conf and the .php
examples.
Things like Oracle connections are obviously more difficult but it would
help support if we could know they installed PHPINABOX V1 so everything
PHPwise should be inplace.
Basically the idea is to make installing PHP complete with webserver easy
for the average Windows user. Later on they can worry about changing their
webserver or installing the latest version of CVS PHP.. but to get them
started they would just run setup.exe
Anybody interested?

the oci8 extension was compiled and linked against the client libaries of
oracle8.1.6, so i'm pretty sure that i won't work with any older version.
