By putting the release on a branch, you can get the effect of shutting down
updates to the release virtually indefinately. Updates can even be made
the release a substantial amount of time *after* shipment, should a
suitably severe problem be found. One need not pick up other changes (even
to the same source file!) in order to ship a patch or refresh.
Note: what I am suggesting is creating a branch and *never* merging.
