I don't know the exact issues at hand here.
But I can comment on your comments on Christians email.
If a package is used and is considered stable any changes needs to be
evaluated based on if they meet the needs of the existing userbase. This
can only be sensibly done by separating all changes into patches.
Anyways since the package has a considerable userbase it has proven its
worthiness. It is upto you to proof the worthiness of the changes to the
packages userbase.
The other alternative is a fork or major version update, although I am
not the judge if that is feasible or if that was even proposed in the
current discussion.
