*sigh*
But you can minimalize the risk by turning your changes into small
chunks .. aka patches. This is really the only way to go. And yes it is
possible to do this even if several private methods have been renamed.
Understand that this is not about not letting Alexey contribute. This is
about the reliability of a well established package. Which is not to say
that this package could not become even more well received once your
changes have been incorporated in the proper manner.
