As Greg mentions in the email I am running to be a pear group member.
PEAR came a long way yet much remains to be done.
Some current policies need to be re-examined in the light of this day,
this includes allowing competing packages and show prominently on the
website which ones follow a set of rules: end-user documentation, unit
tests and following the coding standards.
End-user documentation is a major problem, the group should see to what
can be done (wiki, docbook, etc.).
Many feel PEAR has missed the PHP5 boat, in a way it is true, adoption
of PHP5 for new packages has been slow even though it reflects on the
most widespread PHP version (that is 4). The website has been improved a
lot lately, new ideas need to be ironed out or even imagined on how to
deal with this and the coming PHP6.
The group should make it easier for contributors to come-in and help
coordinate the work of existing contributors. There are a lot of people
willing to help but don't know where to start.
When it comes down to it, the group should work towards making PEAR more
open and communicate more (to stop having this bureaucracy image) on
what it is (a toolbox) and what it wants to achieve (provide
infrastructure, tools and a community).
Arnaud.
