-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I'll throw in a few words now that voting is coming around the corner as well. I've been a somewhat laid back member of the PEAR community for years. I've been using PEAR packages for the better part of a decade and contributing since around 2004 (Payment_Process and Net_Curl). I also maintain my own PEAR channel at http://pear.php.net. My main contributions beyond that have been submitting bugs and patches and helping Greg debug PEAR on occasion. Currently, I work for Digg.com and I'm currently working on a few PEAR packages that I hope to submit back to the community any day now. Some things on my radar if I were to be voted into the PEAR Group: 1.) Promoting PEAR as a distribution method. I'd like to see more channels with a wider range of code and applications. The core PEAR channel is amazing, but I think there's room for channels that distribute PHP applications, etc. that wouldn't be accepted into PEAR, but would be great to be installable via PEAR. 2.) I'd like to be involved in helping Greg with PEAR2. I think PEAR2 is one of the more important projects for PEAR in the near future as PHP6 approaches in the coming year or two. 3.) Moving PEAR to PHP5-only. I've been a staunch proponent of moving PEAR towards PHP5+ only packages for some time now. I firmly believe PHP4 is dead and should be treated as such. We shouldn't be accepting PHP4 packages nor should we be promoting PHP4 packages. Ideally, I'd like to see a separate channel for PHP5-only packages so developers could move their packages to PHP5 without having to rename them "Foo2". 4.) I'd like to see PEAR more proactive when it comes to documentation and quality assurance. The QA team should have more power to apply patches and fix things. There should be a set protocol to follow for QA to take over, maintain, patch and turn over packages to other maintainers. I'd like to see a wiki as well. 5.) Each PEAR developer should get a pony and free beer. A long shot, for sure, but I've been wanting a pony for a long time now. Any pony breeders (or breweries) out there that are staunch PEAR advocates? - --Joe On Apr 18, 2007, at 9:26 PM, Gregory Beaver wrote:
Hello, The first elections for the new PEAR Group will commence in about 24 hours, and last until May 1. If each candidate would be willing to describe their ideals (or specific plans) for moving PEAR forward, this may be helpful for those who are going to be voting. 7 candidates will be selected for the PEAR Group. This election is the big one: the PEAR Group will make decisions that affect every single developer, including defining what a collective is, which packages belong to which collectives, assigning CVS karma for developers, and other vitally important tasks.
