"It's easy to use and it fulfills most of the needs for today's Web developers." That would be an accurate description.
But if you have a closer look on PHP, there are limitations, especially for complex web sites (Zend's potential clients!).
Please don't worry about Zend Tech. If you have suggestions to Zend Tech, php-dev@ is not the forum the make them. I have no argument with Kristian about the limitations he pointed out. I have a serious argument with him on whether addressing these limitations should be done within the application that is called 'PHP'.
As your company states on zend.com, your goal is to approve these limitations - so please DO IT or revise zend.com and say that PHP's only goal is the ease of use and not to be a global player in today's web site problems. (Ha, back to the roots: let's use PHP only for form validation and displaying some easy DB queries and loose all the market potentials that you have NOW).
We do intend to do it, and are working on it. A quick disclaimer would be that it won't necessarily be the way Kristian wants to do it, as I strongly disagree with him that it should be done by smashing PHP's structure and designing it from scratch, but rather, by providing components that would improve performance and usability. Of course, it will be complemented by things that do need to be improved in PHP itself, such as the object model.
BTW, what are your VCs saying about this facts?
That's definitely not something that belongs in a public debate. Zeev -- Zeev Suraski <zeev@zend.com> CTO, Zend Technologies Ltd. http://www.zend.com/
