"PHP without OO is simply not acceptable" is a religious-like statement, as if it's a God-given rule. I personally never used the OO interface in PHP (Andrei - I did write quite a few PHP applications). None of them was huge, but you know something - I'd guesstimate that there are tens of thousands of people who are using PHP for medium sized applications, which means that PHP could live happily without an OO interface. I'm not saying that large scale apps must use the OO interface, by the way. I'm not saying that medium/small sized apps mustn't use it. I am saying that it's far from being crystal clear that PHP needed this OO interface to begin with.
Note that the PHP object oriented syntax was born on a night when I was a bit too unsleepy, a bit too bored, and it was born as syntactic sugar for arrays.
