Hi Joel,
That 'inability to search for functions' part is actually completely wrong,
I implemented that well over a year ago. I'll admit it's not wonderful, but
it's definitely there!
The wiki is hosted by Manuel Kiessling, I will forward your comments to him
if he doesn't pick up on them via the list. But you'll probably find that
he is also working long hours and unable to commit a great deal of his time
to php.net work at present. I know it's difficult for developers on the
other side of the fence to comprehend, but everything on php.net relies on
the goodwill, spare time and willingness of those involved to drop
everything else for it. That includes websites, documentation, software
development and even the underlying server administration. On a big project
(like PHP itself) there are a lot of people involved in keeping things
ticking over, and perhaps 30 or so who give up their entire social life to
its needs. On a small project (like PHP-GTK), you need to divide that
dedicated manpower by 10 or more - and you also need to keep in mind that
the development side of this particular project relies on two other OSS
components being in a useful and stable state.
There's no mention of PHP 5 at all on the PHP-GTK site for the very good
reason that the PHP-GTK project doesn't use it yet! (There were early
experiments, but they were dropped because Zend Engine 2's development
hadn't stablized enough to work with it reliably at that point in time;
there was never a release at that point.) There is, however, plenty of
mention of PHP 5 in the SEARCHABLE list archives (via gtk.php.net), mostly
from people asking when will PHP-GTK 2 come out. Given that PHP 5.0.0 is
not quite 48 hours old at this moment in time - 'nuff said I think. You
can't build with blocks that aren't even hardened yet.
Back to work..
- Steph
